World-renowned mathematician Dr. David Mumford has been awarded the National Medal of Science by the U.S. government.
Dr. Mumford who is an Emeritus Professor of Applied Mathematics at Brown University, was also a previous recipient of the Fields Medal (1974), the most prestigious award in Mathematics, and a MacArthur Foundation "Genius" grant (1987). He was involved in co-editing two World Scientific book titles, Advances In Deterministic and Stochastic Analysis (2007), and Harmonic, Wavelet and p-Adic Analysis (2007).
In a statement issued, Dr. Mumford said that he was pleased that the medal "will bring attention to the important role of science and mathematics in our society."
Congratulating Dr. Mumford on his award, Mr Max Phua, Executive Director of World Scientific, said, "This award is a testimony of David's great achievements which I am certain will inspire many others in their respective fields to do likewise."
