AFTERTHOUGHTS OF RECENTLY ELECTED 2010 FELLOW OF THE AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY DR. VAN VLIET
"They did it, I got it!" exclaimed World Scientific author Dr. Carolyne Marina Van Vliet, when she was informed about her election as a 2010 Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS).

Dr Van Vliet, who is an adjunct Professor of Physics at the University of Miami and Professor Emerita of Theoretical Physics at the University of Montreal was elected because of her "seminal contributions to the foundations of Linear Response Theory and to Quantum Transport involving extended or localized states, with applications to Condensed Matter problems" and was happy that her nomination for election as a Fellow was accepted.

The Dutch-born American physicist said, "I was hoping that the Committee would be receptive to my long-time fundamental research. My first attempt at an election in 2009 was tabled and held over. This year, my sponsors added another supporting letter, which emphasized that most of the citation-related work was summarized and applied to various outstanding problems in my book Equilibrium and Non- Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics, thus updating the actuality and relevance of my research. The committee gloriously accepted the nomination!"

Commenting on her book, Dr Van Vliet said, "This book will help the future scientist in Condensed Matter physics to not only understand the statistical-physics principles underlying many solid-state problems, but through its many detailed examples to acquire the tools to become an active and productive researcher in the field.

When asked about the directions which her book would inspire in the areas of future research, Dr Van Vliet replied, "The area of applications of Linear Response Theory and of Quantum Transport of heat, electricity and particle flow in Condensed Matter physics is very much alive. The systematic methods I developed and many detailed explicit results are readily extended to new situations... researchers will save themselves time by studying these methods."

The Fellow award goes to about 200 of the APS members (or 0.5% of APS's 46,000 members) annually.
