World Scientific authors Drs. Shu Chien and B Jayant Baliga have been named recipients of the National Medal of Science and National Medal of Technology and Innovation respectively by President Obama.
Dr Shu Chien was among seven eminent researchers to receive the National Medal of Science award while Dr Baliga was among five inventors for the National Medal of Technology and Innovation award. These awards are the highest honours bestowed by the United States government on scientists, engineers and inventors. The authors will receive the awards in a White House ceremony later this year.
In a statement issued, President Obama commended the recipients for their "passion for innovation and a desire to make the world a better place" and that their ingenuity was a sense of inspiration to "reach higher and try harder, no matter how difficult the challenges we face".
Dr Shu Chien has authored/co-authored several books with World Scientific, including Introduction to Bioengineering, An Introductory Text to Bioengineering, Tributes to Yuan-Cheng Fung on his 90th Birthday - Biomechanics: From Molecules to Man. He is also on the editorial board for the Journal of Mechanics in Medicine and Biology. Dr Baliga has authored two books entitled Silicon RF Power Mosfets and Silicon Carbide Power Devices. About Dr Shu Chien
 Shu Chien is University Professor of Bioengineering and Medicine in University of California System and Director of UC System-wide "Bioengineering Institute in California." At UCSD, he is Y.C. Fung Professor of Bioengineering & Medicine and Director of Institute of Engineering in Medicine. He was the Founding Chair of Department of Bioengineering from 1994-1999 and 2002-2005. He is a world leader in molecular, cellular and integrative studies on bioengineering and physiology in health and disease. He served as President of many societies, including the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. He has authored more than 500 journal articles and edited 11 books. He is one of only 5 scientists in the world who are members of all four US National Academies: National Academy of Science, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as Academia Sinica in Taiwan and Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing (Foreign Member). About Dr B Jayant Baliga
 Dr. Baliga is an internationally renowned scientist, prolific author of 18 books and over 550 publications, and an established educator in the field of power semiconductor devices with over 100 U.S. Patents to his name. Among his inventions, the most widely commercialized device is the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) extensively used around the globe for compact fluorescent lamps, air-conditioning, home appliance controls, robotics, electric-cars/bullet-trains and compact defibrillators projected by the AMA to save 100,000 lives a year. The energy efficiency improvements derived from IGBTs have saved world-wide consumers more than $ 15 Trillion while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 78 Trillion pounds. The applications of IGBTs and their impact on society have been documented in a detailed 140-page report titled: "The IGBT Compendium: Applications and Social Impact" available on the NCSU website. In 1984, he was listed among the 100 Brightest Young Scientists in America by Science Digest Magazine. His numerous awards include the 1993 IEEE Morris E. Liebman Award for his contributions to the emerging Smart Power Technology, the 1998 J.J. Ebers Award, the highest recognition given by the IEEE Electron Devices Society; and the 1999 Lamme Medal given by the IEEE Board of Governors at Whitehall Palace in London. The University of North Carolina system selected him for the 1998 O. Max Gardner Award, which recognizes the faculty member among the 16 constituent universities who has made the greatest contribution to the welfare of the human race. In 2011, North Carolina State University conferred up on him the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal of Excellence, the highest award given to a faculty member. At the age of 45, he was elected to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering, the highest honor in the engineering profession. Dr. Baliga is also a serial entrepreneur having founded four successful companies in North Carolina with venture capital financing. President Obama presented the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest honor conferred by the United States Government to an Engineer, to Dr. Baliga on October 21, 2011 at a ceremony in the White House.
