Launch of "Engines of Discovery" at CERN
Professor Edmund Wilson, co-author with Andrew Sessler of the book "Engines of Discovery — A Century of Particle Accelerators", made a presentation about his book on the 11 July 2007 at CERN. Professor Wilson, who has been actively engaged in research at CERN since the early sixties, gave a presentation that was informal and inspiring to an audience of young researchers. A book signing session followed the presentation.
"Engines of Discovery" chronicles fully the development of particle accelerators, from the invention of electrostatic accelerators, to linear accelerators, the cyclotron and finally to the colliders of today.
The event attracted about 50 guests including many senior CERN researchers and as well as the young faces of CERN summer students. The audience's enthusiasm reflected what is described in the book as one of the most, if not the most, incredible scientific adventures of the twentieth century, which has not yet reached its conclusion. Two further launch events are planned for September 2007.
